How to build a garden or polytunnel irrigation system

Step 1 - Understanding the system.
Drip irrigation systems use a thinner hose than your standard garden hose. Our systems are designed to begin with a standard Hozelock stye fitting which simply clicks into your garden hose connection. For the drop irrigation system there are only 2 types of pipe, a supply pipe and a dripper pipe. The supply pipe carries the water from your hose connection to dripper lines which are placed in the area you want watered.

For example, if you had 2 raised beds you would use a supply pipe to connect to bed one where you will attach a dripper pipe to run around the beds. You would then attach a length of supply pipe to connect to bed two where you would add your second dripper pipe. Apart from any fittings you may attach to get around bends etc... this is essentially 2 single watering line using the 2 different types of pipe.

Step 2  - Planning the system.
You will find it much easier to draw a plan of your watering system before you start so you can figure out what connectors you might need. You can click on the images of each connector above to see what is use for but in brief please see below:

Hozelock Female connecter - Joins your garden hose 'click' fitting to your 16mm adaptor.

16mm Supply Hose - Supplies the dripper hose with water.

16mm Dripper Hose - Contains dripper valves every 30 cm and irrigates your plants.

16mm adaptor - Screws into Hozelock female and joins it to the 16mm irrigation system supply pipe.

16mm Tee Fitting - Splits a supply or dripper pipe into 2.

16mm Elbow - Creates a 90 degree bend.

16mm Coupler - For joining supply and/or dripper pipe.

16mm Stop End - Closes off the end of an irrigation line.

Baccara Irrigation Controller - Optional controller for programming an automatic watering schedule.

Step 3  - Building the system.

The Quickcrop Garden Irrigation System can be adapted to suit a range of vegetable garden designs.

The irrigation system uses a selection of connectors, hoses, valves and timers which can be arranged and connected according to the shape, size and layout of your vegetable garden.

All vegetables have different individual watering requirements and these will also vary throughout the season according to temperature and weather fluctuations. The Quickcrop Irrigation system can be built to accommodate these needs, providing the ability to incorporate separate watering zones and practice a targeted watering regime.

Excellent system, very easy to fit together and can be extended as needed. Takes the hardship out of watering a polytunnel. Very fast delivery, super service!

Hi there, I have 4 raised beds measuring 16x3 feet, a further raised bed 12x12feet and a glass house 16x6feet approx. Is it possible to use the dripper system on all these from one tap?? considering I need to do three runs on the narrow beds and more on the larger, or do I need to isolate different sections?

Hi Suzanne. It's difficult to advise without seeing the layout but provided you have good water pressure you shouldn't have a problem. I would treat them as 3 x separate sections rather than daisy chaining them together in one run.

Hi there, I have 3 raised beds 1.8m by 1.2m. I was planning on running the dripper cable up and down 3 times. Is it ok to loop the cable around or should I cut it and install elbow joints at each turn? Many Thanks. Clare

Hi there, can I use all these parts with a standard soak hose. Is the dropped hose better in terms of water loss and efficiency. Brillant stock of individual parts. Thankyou

Hi Suzanne. I am afraid the connectors we use won't fit a soaker hose and will only fit the 16mm tubing. Personally I prefer the dripper hose as it is more efficient and also better value. I hope this helps. Andrew

Hello, Do you have any recommendations about connecting 12v water pump to a dripline . I'm off the grid and have river for water supply. I have one pump/timer supplying 1000 liter tank and would like to connect dripline to another 12v pump to water 14ft by 40ft polytunnel.

Hi Robert. You should have no problem connecting an inline pump to your feed to the irrigation system. If you are using river water I would recommend using a filter on the irrigation system to avoid potential blockages in drippers. The water pump will likely be a 3/4 inch fitting which you can connect a hozelock type fitting to, you can the connect your 16mm irrigation to the hozelock fitting. I'd be happy to help over the phone or via email. andrew@quickcrop.ie

Hi, My Polytunnel is 40’ long and has 3x1 metre wide beds, will I get the same amount of water in all the beds?
Answered by Andrew
on May 31st, 2019
Hi Michael Yes, you will have the same amount of water in each bed provided the water supply is sufficient. The drippers on the line emit 1.6L of water an hour and are placed every 30cm. You can therefore work out the total consumption by multiplying the number of drippers by 1.6. I hope this helps. Andrew

Hi Maria I would personally go up and down the bed 3 times so if you allow for 30ft of dripper pipe you would have plenty Niall Quickcrop

How long are the pipes?
Answered by John

As long as you want them, all you have to do is fill in the amount in the hose box, sold per metre, so if you enter 5 that's 5 metres.

Hi. I have an allotment and the association is paranoid about people using hosepipes and especially installing drip irrigation systems. As a former organic adviser my recollection is that drip systems are very economic with water, so if you have nay stats on the subject I would be pleased to receive them.

Hi, we don't have stats on hand but it is much more economic with water than hoses and even watering cans
