Simple and effective NPK soil test kit

This is a cheap and simple soil test kit for checking the N.P.K. in your soil and also testing the PH. Different plants need different nutrients to thrive so it's always a good idea to test your soil to see what you have. Vegetable gardening is all in the soil and is the single most important thing you need to attend in your garden.

The kit contains 4 testing vials and 8 testing capsules which gives you enough for 2 tests for each element. Simply place your soil sample in the tube and add the contents of the capsule. Mix in a little water and watch the solution change colour. Compare your colour with the chart provided to determine the levels of NPK and PH. The kit includes a complete users guide.

NPK explained

Different plants need different nutrients to give you the maximum crop. Elements can be broken down into 4 main elements Nitrogen-N, Phosphorus-P and Potassium-K. In general these 3 nutrients are responsible for different aspects of the plants growth.

Here's the basic breakdown:

Nitrogen - Stem and foliage growth.
Phosphorus - Root growth and flower and seed production.
Potassium / potash - Disease resistance and setting fruit.

All plants need these 3 elements but you can tailor the quantities to suit what you're growing. For example a high nitrogen fertilizer is perfect for plants with lots of leafy growth like cabbage or chard. Tomatoes need a fertilizer high in potassium as this is the element responsible for setting fruit.

PH explained

PH means how acid or alkaline a soil is, it is illustrated in a scale form 3.5 (very acid) to 9.0 (Very alkaline). Ideally your garden soil should be somewhere between 5.5 and 7.5 with the optimum being 6.0. Soil PH can be altered by adding garden lime or cal-sea-feed if it's too acidic and adding compost and organic matter if it's too alkaline.
