In a nutshell....
Spelt grain is an ancient form of wheat which has not been bred for its gluten and starch properties and is believed to grow the best wheatgrass. Wheatgrass is very easy to grow and produces a finished crop approx 10 days after sowing.
Spelt wheatgrass seed can be very difficult to get as without very a very careful hulling the seed can be damaged and won't produce good grass. This is one of the reasons we use 'Naturgold' for all our seeds as their process and consistency is so reliable. Spelt wheatgrass is a good alternative to people with wheat allergies and produces a juice of similar nutritional content as regular wheatgrass juice.
Regular wheatgrass juicers will tell you it makes you feel great with many people claiming it has cured them of minor and major illnesses. The juice is reported to have a number of health benefits including the ability to stabalise blood sugars, boost red blood cell production, improve circulation, prevent inflamamtion and treat skin conditions as well as more serious health problems. As with most natural remedies there a lack of documented research to support these claims but large numbers of people swear by it and use wheatgrass as an intergral part of their healthy eating regime.
The reason we've started stocking wheatgrass is from the amount of calls to the office looking for organic wheatgrass seeds and the amazing stories we've heard first hand. We spoke to a older gentleman recently (not someone you'd expect as a wheatgrass advocate) who after suffering from an extreme skin condition for over 25 years tried wheatgrass as a last resort. He was amazed to find the condition completely clear after 8 weeks of regular wheatgrass shots. I know too many people who swear by the stuff to dismiss it as a fad.
Wheatgrass is very easy to grow and requires the minimum of equipment. All you need is a quality wheat seed like our 'Naturgold' organic wheatgrass seed, some seed trays and a nutritious compost mix. The seed is washed and left to germinate in a glass jar before being spread on a layer of compost mix.
Fill a seed tray with 2 inches of compost mix and sprinkle an even layer of germinated seeds across the surface. The compost needs to remain moist at this stage so cover the tray with a layer of moistened newspaper to prevent drying. Keep the cover on the wheatgrass for 2-3 days, watering morning and evening to make sure the compost doesn't dry out. When the sprouts are about 2 inches high remove the cover and place the tray in indirect sunlight to green up the stems. Direct sunlight will cause the compost to dry and will inhibit growth.
Harvest your crop of wheatgrass when it's 7-8 inches high and at it's nutritional peak, this will be 4-5 days after you remove the cover. You will know the wheatgrass is ready to harvest when a new blade of grass begins to grow off the man stem. This is called 'splitting'. The grass can now be harvested with a scissors by clipping just above the root.
Wheatgrass will keep for about a week in the fridge but is at it's best when used fresh.
We recommend using 'Living Green' organic wormcast compost for growing wheatgrass as it supplies all the nutrients you will need and will easily sustain your wheatgrass through its growing cycle. Most mutipurpose composts contain man made plant feeds while living green is am entirely natural product.
Our certified organic spelt wheatgrass seed is grown on Christine Menzel's organic farm in Hungary where she has been producing organic wheat, spelt, oats and barley since 1988. Germination rates and subsequent growth are excellent with full trays of rich green spelt wheatgrass ready for harvesting and juicing 9-10 days after sowing.
