Certified organic natural wheatgrass seed

Our certified organic wheatgrass seed is grown on Christine Menzel's organic farm in Hungary where she has been producing organic wheat, spelt, oats and barley since 1988. The quality of the wheat is exceptional with batches regularly tested for their nutritional content and a very fast harvest/processing time ensuring the highest standard finished product.

Germination rates and subsequent growth are excellent with full trays of rich green wheatgrass ready for harvesting and juicing 9-10 days after sowing.

'Naturgold Farms' are certified by the organic certification agency HU-01 Biokontroll Hungaria an also certified to NOP, BioSuisse and Demeter standards.

Wheatgrass benefits

Wheatgrass juice is reported to have a number of health benefits including the ability to stabalise blood sugars, boost red blood cell production, improve circulation, prevent inflamamtion and treat skin conditions as well as more serious health problems. As with most natural remedies there a lack of documented research to support these claims but large numbers of people swear by it and use wheatgrass as an intergral part of their healthy eating regime.

It is the strength of the testimonies from wheatgrass users that is most compelling with many people attributing recovery from a range of ailments to regular shots of wheatgrass juice. The benefits of wheatgrass seem more apparent when used as part of a broader raw food juicing regime which is based on consuming raw, unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables.

How to grow wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is very easy to grow and requires the minimum of equipment. All you need is a quality wheat seed like our 'Naturgold' organic wheatgrass seed, some seed trays and a nutritious compost mix. The seed is washed and left to germinate in a glass jar before being spread on a layer of compost mix.

Fill a seed tray with 2 inches of compost mix and sprinkle an even layer of germinated seeds across the surface. The compost needs to remain moist at this stage so cover the tray with a layer of moistened newspaper to prevent drying. Keep the cover on the wheatgrass for 2-3 days, watering morning and evening to make sure the compost doesn't dry out. When the sprouts are about 2 inches high remove the cover and place the tray in indirect sunlight to green up the stems. Direct sunlight will cause the compost to dry and will inhibit growth.

Harvest your crop of wheatgrass when it's 7-8 inches high and at it's nutritional peak, this will be 4-5 days after you remove the cover. You will know the wheatgrass is ready to harvest when a new blade of grass begins to grow off the man stem. This is called 'splitting'. The grass can now be harvested with a scissors by clipping just above the root.

Wheatgrass will keep for about a week in the fridge but is at it's best when used fresh.

Hi, I am looking for wheat seeds. Want to grow wheat in September with my students in school. Have been told wheat is a good one! Are wheat different to wheatgrass seeds? WE want to plant outside. Thanks, Rozz

Hi Rozz. Wheat and wheatgrass seeds are the same thing. The latter are just named wheatgrass because they are used for growing to the grass stage and juicing. If you left the grass to grow it would produce wheat. I hope this helps. Andrew
