Planted these last year and produced a good crop of fine onions with almost none bolting. Recommended!

I planted 100 sets of Shakespeare onions in October of last year, all sets fired and only one bolted. the best overwintering onion I have ever grown for size, taste and more importantly bolt resistance. I highly recommend these onions.

I ordered the onion sets because none of the garden centres in Sligo had any. They told me that there was no demand for them. I planted the sets in grow rings http://growrings.ie/ as soon as they arrived, in September. I covered them in a mulch of seaweed. I haven't paid much attention to them since except to notice that they are growing away happily sending green shoots up through the layer of seaweed. They probably got a good start because the Irish autumn weather was very mild this year (2015). So, there we have it. I planted the sets and they are growing. I intend to use them in 2016 in various recipes but for now there is nothing else to report.

Hi Is there a video explaining what happens to winter onions? When would they be harvesting? How do I mind them over the winter? Thanks Siobhán

Hi Siobhan. We do have a video on planting Onions but not specifically for winter Onions. They are very much the same the only difference is you will be harvesting them in late May instead of mid July and they are a lot less likely to bolt so tend to give better crops.
