I had winterbor in my garden two years ago and while i didn't like the cleaning of the very curly leaves and the way the caterpillars hide in it, it really came into it's own in winter / spring when there is little green available. i loved the taste and the fact that it survives the winter outside. well worth a little cleaning

Hi Eamonn Yes but it is getting quite late for germination. If temperatures stay like this for another week or so they should germinate Niall Quickcrop

when can i harvest winterbor kale
Answered by Niall
on June 07th, 2019
Hi Rudi It depends how early you have sown it. If sown in April it will be ready for first picking in July and you can keep harvesting from it for 2/3 months. If only sown in June/July harvesting will be late September on Niall Quickcrop

I'm looking for a tall kale plant as my ground space is limited. Is this a tall growing kale.

All of the Kale plants will grow tall towards the end of the year and over Winter (apart from the dwarf, compact varieties), Winterbor is no exception. Nero Di Toscana and Red Russian kale would also be ideal but personally I think Winterbor has better flavour and texture.

When can Kale be harvested? Mine are growing very well in the raised beds I bought from you and are just about 8" high, but I'd like to know when I can start to steam cook and stir fry. Many thanks

Hi Julia. You can start harvesting the lower leaves on your kale now. Remember it is important not to harvest the central growing tip or the plant will stop growing. Kale can be kept productive by using the lower leaves, it will remain productive in to the Winter. I hope this helps. Andrew
