This spade is Andrew's favourite due to it's long, narrow blade and long straight handle. The Darby Industrial Grade spade is a versatile tool ideal for the heaviest jobs but, because of it's narrow blade, is also accurate for transplanting or edging.
A narrow blade also slips into the soil more easily, while the long handle provides leverage for shifting buried stones or other stubborn objects. If digging post holes for fencing, you will also find this blade and handle combination perfect for neat and square holes.
Finally, a long handled spade is the quickest way to weed a gravel path by slicing the blade back and forth under the gravel. This method is a bit of a workout, but once mastered, will make you the fastest weeder in the west!
