Description
The Wild Cherry is a most attractive tree in Spring with a profusion of white or very pale pink flowers followed by small, tart cherries in Autumn. The cherries are not good eaten raw and tend to be eaten by birds before they are fully ripe. Both the cherry bark and leaves are also attractive with the latter producing bright red, orange and golden yellow Autumn colours.
The Wild Cherry is an important habitat tree and supports many species of wildlife including large numbers of insects and birds. The cherry is often seen as part of traditional hedging and is also naturally occurring in mixed deciduous woodland. Cherry wood is often used in furniture making for it's attractive reddish brown colour.
