The Vegtrug is a raised vegetable trough planter that sits off the ground on legs and is completely portable. It is the easy way to have your own vegetable garden anywhere, from outdoors on patios, porches and balconies, to indoors in greenhouses, polytunnels or even in the house. In many ways the vegtrug is better than regular raised beds, it is a good deal taller and stands at a comfortable waist height. Vegetables are largely protected from slugs and snails by the height of the trough, to be completely slug free try wrapping copper strips around the legs. This will completely turn them around. The extra height also protects vulnerable vegetable seedlings from household pets. The timber used is sustainably sourced fir and is treated in vegetable gardening friendly stain to prevent rot. A membrane liner also comes with the vegtrug to offer a little extra protection.

At almost 1 metre tall this really is a raised vegetable garden! The 'Vegtrug' raised garden takes the hard work out of vegetable growing. We absolutely love them! They are a perfect outside the back door for herbs and salad, when you need a few crunchy leaves or fresh aromatic herbs just pop out and grab a handful. its one of the tallest raised beds and is perfect for people with back problems and is even wheelchair accessible. You can even grow deeper rooted crops like parsnips, carrots and potatoes along the centre of the bed thanks to it's clever 'v' shape design.

The VegTrug has been designed to be easily built from the box and comes in 1m long versions as well to suit any garden or balcony. Purpose built polycover, micromesh and fleece covers are available with frames to get the most out of your vegtrug garden planter. They help dramatically lengthen the growing season as well as offering reliable protection from pests, weather and disease. The Vegtrug makes the ideal gift idea for the vegetable gardener.

Wheelchair Accessible

Like our Vegi-Table planter, all the Vegtrugs 1m, 1.8m and aluminium models are wheelchair accessible. Always remember if you are working from a seated positiion to work sideways (over the arm rest), rather than to the front as this prevents accidental falling and less reaching is required.

We try and keep our delivery charges as low as possible, we only charge €3.95/£3.95 delivery per order. This applies to all our raised garden planters regardless of the size of the order.

I had seen one of the vegtrugs in a friends garden so already know what they looked like. Very pleased to have my own. Takes a little bit of time to put together but well worth it. Delighted with the result.

Found the online build video a great help, Electric screwdriver makes it an easy job, wouldn't advise trying to assemble without one. Looking forward to reaping the benefits with lots of fresh veg and herbs, Will definitely be getting a second one

Just a note to say that my Vegtrug has arrived this morning and I am totally delighted! It took my husband 45 minutes to construct (including all the unpacking and placing in situ) with the aid of an electric screwdriver and a socket wrench. What a marvellous piece of kit. Thank you so much.

its a great product. Definitely one to buy if you have an issue with your back. Took around two hours to build with the help of my son and two bags of soil to fill but I look forward to planting some seeds in a few weeks. I bought the cover as well which was easily attached and hoepfully will protect it from excess rain.

I had to get a neighbour to help in the end and used an electric screwdriver to assemble. Looked great finished but took nearly a full afternoon even though was tols would take an hour and a half! Very nice product but leave yourself plenty of time!

What organic compost do you recommend to fill the vegtrug with? Thanks
Answered by Niall
on September 15th, 2021
Hi Brenda The 20kg Quickcrop Veg mix bags mixed with 1 x 60 litre of Envirogrind. You will need 7 of these along with 1 x Envirogrind. Or if you have use for soil elsewhere in the garden you can get a tonne bag of the veg mix. Half of it will fill the Vegtrug and the rest is great as a general mix in the garden Niall Quickcrop

I have an issue with rats getting into my polycarbonate tunnel. Do you honestly think they would not be able to climb the legs of a veg trug? Thanks.
Answered by Niall
on August 09th, 2021
Hi Gina In all the years of us selling the Vegtrug we have never had anyone report rats or mice getting up on to the bed. That said rats can climb trees so if there was enough of a temptation they maybe they could. But in reality it would need to be raw meat or something very smelly to attract them up. Veg growing certainly would not Niall Quickcrop

Hi I plan to buy a Vegtrug for growing vegetables and herbs. Which soil do you advise to purchase to fill the Vegtrug. Any other essentials required? Thank you
Answered by Carmel
on June 28th, 2021
Hi Madeline, sorry for the delay in replying. I'd recommend a potting compost. You would need 6 of these 70 litre bags; (https://www.quickcrop.ie/product/klasmann-potting-compost--70-litres) and some Seafeed (https://www.quickcrop.ie/product/seafeed-organic-seaweed-meal-soil-and-plant-feed2) or similar slow release soil & plant food. Hope this helps. Carmel Quickcrop

Are castors an option with this planter? Would be handy if it needed to be moved. Thanks
Answered by Niall
on May 11th, 2021
Hi Michael We have had one or two customers add castors however the issue is weight. When the Vegtrug is filled and the soil gets moisture in to it you can be looking at 500kg in weight for the Trug and the soil combined. This requires serious castors to carry that weight and also would be very hard to move around Niall Quickcrop

Hi there, can the grey wash model be painted/stained and if so, what product would you recommend?
Answered by Niall
on March 01st, 2021
Hi Tracy It can of course but it is treated so no real need to paint it further. However if you want to do so make sure to use an environmental paint like Restol as otherwise it will leech in to the soil and you don't want that when growing your own food Niall Quickcrop

Hi would a vegtrug be suitable to grow raspberries in and if so would I need to grow them in shallow or deeper soil. Many thanks Chris
Answered by Niall
on August 05th, 2020
Hi Chris We have had a number of customers growing various fruit in vegtrugs and the depth of soil is not an issue. I suppose the only issue might be that raspberries grow quite high and as the Vegtrug is already at waste height picking the crop might prove a little difficult. Other than that i can't see any issue. Niall Quickcrop

Is the Vegtrug best sited in full sun or partial shade, my garden is full sun one side partial shade the other.
Answered by Niall
on July 15th, 2020
Hi Paul It depends what you want to grow to be honest. In general the more sun the better for growing. It just means more watering but more crops as well. The only plants that prefer less sun really are hardy herbs and some of the oriental salads. I would say full sun is your better option Niall Quickcrop

Asked By Frederike
on April 29th, 2019
What soil would you recommend?
Answered by Niall
on April 29th, 2019
Hi Frederike Our bulk bags of Vegetable soil mix is probably the best mix However there is 850 litres in a tonne bag of this and you only need half of this to fill a 1.8m trug. The other option if you can't find a home for the additional soil is to use standard Veg mix compost on our website and mix in 1 bag of Envirogrind 60 litre compost just to ensure you have plenty of nutrients in the soil Niall Quickcrop

how many strawberry plants can i plant in this vegtrug? when planting these close together would 50 be too much?
Answered by Niall
on August 14th, 2018
Hi Tom Yes 50 would be to much. If you plant Strawberries to close they will actually produce less fruit for the area. The maximum i would plant is 18. So 1 on each side about 4 inches in and then one in the centre. These would then be spaced every foot along the unit giving 18 in total. Even at that this will be a little tight but should work Regards Niall Quickcrop

on November 04th, 2016
Hi Irene. Sorry i thought we had them up on the website but i have just checked and they are not there yet. I will have our IT guy put them up early next week as they are new to our stock but we have them now. On the varnish. Just clear varnish from any paint shop but to be honest you probably don't need it.

Can you advise what I should use to keep the vegtrug in good condition as I have now had it for two years and it is starting to look a bit shabby
Answered by Andrew
on November 03rd, 2016
Hi Irene. We have covers that you can put on the unit for the winter which help a lot with weathering. Once it is properly dry over after being covered for the winter you can put a varnish on the outside to help keep it from weathering further. That said if you cover it during the winter it will easily last another 8/10 years even if it does look a little tired.
Asked By Anne Marie
on June 04th, 2016
Can you just fill it with compost from B&Q or do you need top soil in it?
Answered by Andrew
on June 08th, 2016
Hi Anne Marie. You can fill it with standard Vegetable soil mix which you will get in any good garden centre. Vegetables need a lot of nutrients to grow well so the more compost in the mix the better.
Asked By Tina
on February 21st, 2016
Hi, does the soil have to be changed every year? Thank you
Answered by Andrew
on February 22nd, 2016
A good question Tina. No is the simple answer. If you start with good vegetable soil mix you shouldn't need to add to it for about 3 years although because vegetables are hungry crops it is always an idea to add some well composted material to the top of the soil each winter. It also protects the soils nutrients from washing out of the Vegtrug.

Answered by Andrew
on October 12th, 2015
Hi Marilyn. The planks in the base of the Vegtrug have small gaps between then allowing water to drain out. The vegtrug is also fitted with a semi-permeable liner which holds the soil in but allows excess water to drain out. I hop[e this helps. Andrew
