All our bare root hedging plants are supplied in packs of 25 plants and are picked to order rather than lifted and stored. These hedge plants are much quicker to establish in the Spring because their roots spend less time out of the ground. Our nursery is small, independent, and located in the the North West so our plants are tough and able to thrive on any site.
Buying bare root hedging is the most cost effective way to grow your own hedge. They are called bare root hedge plants because they have been dug up from our nursery and are sent out as is with no compost or container. This doesn't harm the little plants as they enter a dormant state once they are dug up that also serves to make them easier to transfer than their potted counterparts.
We supply each of our hedges in two different variations; standard or premium. Standard hedging plants are recommended for agricultural or larger scale applications, while premium hedges are more suited for garden and domestic use. From a growers point of view the difference is the speed the hedge will establish. While all our hedging stock is 2 years old the Premium plants will create a hedge that is a year ahead of the Standard spec for the reasons stated below.
Plants are grown from seedling stock planted in a field situation at approx 2 inches apart. Standard stock is supplied unpruned and will need to cut back to 15cm when planted out. The plants will produce a hedge of the same quality as the Premium hedge but will typically be one year behind in terms of growth. Standard spec is more suitable for large scale agricultural applications.
Premium plants are grown from seedling stock planted in a field situation at approx 6 inches apart to allow more room for root development. Plants are pre pruned to 15cm to create a multi-stemmed plant. Premium plants are also 'undercut' which involves pruning the roots 15cm below ground, this produces a larger root ball which is much quicker to establish. Premium hedging is more suitable for garden applications where a thick hedge is needed quickly.
Our selection of bare root hedging plants is quite new to the site and we will be adding to it as the seasons progress. Currently we supply Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Beech, Purple Beech, Oval Leaf Privet, Hornbeam, Griselinia Littoralis, Cotoneaster Francheti, Laurel Hedging, and our selection pack of edible hedge packs.
Our edible hedging pack contains a mix of 25 hedging plants that produce fruit and nuts for Autumn foragers as well as providing a much needed habitat for wild life, birds, and insects. Included in this tasty pack are: Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, Elder flower, Elder berry, Crab Apple, Wild Pear, Dog Rose and June Berry. I know it sounds funny to have edible hedging but this pack of hedging plants produce fruits that can be used to make your own jams, jellies, sauces, chutneys, and drinks. The hazel nuts and june berries can be eaten directly off the hedge.
We stock a great selection of hedging plants that can help you turn any lawn or garden into your own private retreat. If erecting a wall or putting in some fencing are not on the table then hedging plants are a great option for retaining some privacy. Aside from creating privacy, a good hedge or row of trees can block an unsightly view and add an organic border to a property. A natural boundary has many advantages over traditional fencing. They can require quite low to no maintenance at all and will also offer some much needed natural habitat for wildlife. When it comes to planting for privacy, here are some of our top picks.
Hedging like Cotoneaster Francheti, Griselinia Littoralis, and Laurel are an excellent choice as they are evergreen and will give privacy all year round. The Common or Cherry Laurel and Cotoneaster Francheti would be my first choices for a screening hedge as they are quite attractive hedges that you won't get fed up looking at. They both have dense, deep green foliage with a slightly shiny hue and, being evergreen, will provide year round privacy and protection. Cotoneaster and Laurels are both tough and hardy plants so are ideally suited to growing in our climate. Criselinia littoralis is a very quick growing (20-40 cm per year), evergreen shrub with fresh and vibrant apple-green coloured leaves. It is very easy to trim so is a great low maintenance evergreen hedging plant. Griselinia prefers well-drained soil and is one of the most suitable species for gardens in coastal areas. Common Beech hedging is probably most popular as a standalone specimen but it does make a great alternatives to fences or walls when grown as a hedge. A Beech hedge will lose it's leaves in the Winter but won't end up looking as sparse as other hedging as the fallen leaves tend to remain in the branches. This makes Beech great for creating a natural winter screen for plants.
