Size & Rootstock

Distributed from mid November to mid February annually

Hornbeam is a fast-growing semi-evergreen that works great as a privacy screen, making it a popular choice for suburban gardens. Its deep green leaves turn a pale yellow in the autumn and adopt a light brown colouring in the winter. Because of its dense growth, the Hornbeam is an excellent choice for sound and wind proofing.

Our Plants - We run a relatively small, independent nursery so our bare root plants are lifted to order rather than lifted and stored. Plants which are lifted to order are quicker to establish in Spring as their root systems spend less time out of the ground. Our plants are also grown in an exposed North West location and have had to deal with all nature can throw at them. They are supplied as tough, top quality bare root plants that will thrive on any site.

What is the difference between Standard and Premium spec?
From a growers point of view the difference is the speed the hedge will establish. While all our hedging stock is 2 years old the Premium plants will create a hedge that is a year ahead of the Standard spec for the reasons stated below.

Standard Spec
Plants are grown from seedling stock planted in a field situation at approx 2 inches apart. Standard stock is supplied unpruned and will need to cut back to 15cm when planted out. The plants will produce a hedge of the same quality as the Premium hedge but will typically be one year behind in terms of growth. Standard spec is more suitable for large scale Agri applications.

Premium Spec
Premium plants are grown from seedling stock planted in a field situation at approx 6 inches apart to allow more room for root development. Plants are pre pruned to 15cm to create a multi-stemmed plant. Premium plants are also 'undercut' which involves pruning the roots 15cm below ground, this produces a larger root ball which is much quicker to establish. Premium hedging is more suitable for garden applications where a thick hedge is needed quickly.

We have an established beech hedging and when the leaves fall, we have a problem with a nosey neighbour! Could we interplant these into an already established hedge?

Hi Samantha Hornbeam is really good for this however you could either have to take some of the existing hedging out and replant with the Hornbeam of plant in front of the existing hedging Niall Quickcrop

Do these plants need protecting from deer?
Answered by Niall
on October 31st, 2019
Hi Peter Most of the evergreen hedging Hornbeam included is slightly toxic to eat so Deer will normally stay well away from eating it. That said they are capable of eating it in a very cold spell when there is nothing else to eat. However i have yet to see them do so Niall Quickcrop

How many premium hornbeam would I need for 20 meters?

Hi Trisha This pack of 25 will comfortably cover between 15 to 25 metres. We would normally suggest a planting distance of 2/3ft between plants which is 65/100cm distancing Regards Niall Quickcrop
