Description
The Organko 2 is a stylish Bokashi bin with a 9.6 litre capacity. It can be kept close to hand on kitchen countertops, allowing you to add food scraps and unused material.
'Bokashi' is a natural fermentation process which processes kitchen and organic waste without the unpleasant odours of rotting food. The Organko 2 ferments food scraps over a period of about 2-4 weeks in anaerobic (airless) conditions.
A specially designed 'Bokashi bran' is sprinkled on each layer of food scraps. This bran is inoculated with friendly microbes and it 'kickstarts' the fermentation process, as well as preventing the decay of organic material.
What you end up with at the end of the fermentation process is a 'pre-compost' material that often takes the form of a solid block of pickled material. This can be:
- buried in garden soil
- added to a traditional outdoor compost pile
- or used in a 'soil factory'
The Organko 2 is ideal for efficient recycling of food waste in small spaces or for apartment dwellers. Because of the nature of the fermentation process, the Organko is suitable for meat and fish, solid dairy etc.
It is advisable to have two Organko 2 containers. This allows you to collect food waste in one container while the (sealed) fermentation process is taking place in the other.
