Description
The Jostaberry, sometimes spelled Josterberry, is a blackcurrant and gooseberry cross which grows more like a blackcurrant. A very vigourous grower with fruit twice the size of blackcurrants and good resistance to mildew. The fruit is as popular with birds as humans so protective netting is recommended.
The berry is quite shiny and nearly black and is somewhat smaller than a gooseberry but larger than a blackcurrant. They can be eaten raw or cooked and if unripe can be substituted for gooseberries in certain recipes as well as responding well to freezing. Berries are succulent with a slightly sharp kick and are high in pectin making them well suited for jam making.
Jostaberry Health Benefits:
These berries are high in Vitamin C and Antioxidants and have been proven to reduce risk of chronic diseases.
