Description
For Seed Sowing, Pricking Out & Potting On
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring and non-toxic soft mica mineral for seed germination, pricking out and for use as a houseplant compost. It absorbs nutrients, prevents them from getting washed out of the soil and slowly releases them back to the plant roots.
Vermiculite also retains water and keeps it near to the roots, and helps maintain an even temperature when used as a seed covering.
Vermiculite encourages faster germination in seeds and promotes better aeration and water retention; this all leads to healthier seedling establishment.
Seeds of all sizes can be raised in just vermiculite. It can also be used as a great soil improver.
Smaller seed types may require a mixture of High Quality Compost and Vermiculite, mixed 50/50 by volume.
Choose Your Size:
We stock Vermiculite in 3 different size bags; 10 Litres, 20 Litres, & 100 Litre Bags. Please choose your required one using the 'Bag Size' above.
Instructions
Seed Sowing
The excellent seed germination and water/nutrients retention properties of Dineen Vermiculite may be used when following the Seed Manufacturers instructions during general sowing. Most seeds may be sown this way, although some smaller types may require a mixture of High Quality Compost and Vermiculite, mixed 50/50 by volume.
When compost is used, make sure the seeds are not too deep and ensure you cover the mix with a layer of Vermiculite as insulation, before moistening.
Pricking Out
Gently tease out the roots using a dibber or pencil then plant in a quality Seed and Cutting
compost to which 25% to 35% of Dineen Vermiculite is added by volume. The Vermiculite will
deliver nutrients to the root hairs when applying liquid plant foods.
Potting On
Fill the container to be used with a mixture of Good Quality Compost and 35% to 30% of Dineen
Vermiculite by volume. Ensure enough space exists for the plant’s roots. This will enable the
plants to absorb and retain moisture.
Prior to transplanting the plants, ensure they have been watered well and allowed to drain. Remove the plants from their pots and place in the new container, ensuring the compost/ vermiculite is firmed around the roots.
Place Dineen Vermiculite around the top of the container to ensure insulation; then water and feed appropriately.
