Description
Mushroom compost is the waste product from commercial mushroom growing and is a mildly alkaline compost due to the addition of gypsum in the mushroom farming process. The compost mix is made up of a mix of composted straw, chicken manure, gypsum and organic matter. It is the ideal compost for soil improving and mulching by spreading on the surface of the soil.
This should not be used when growing acid loving plants like blueberries, rhododendrons and azaleas but is ideal when growing plants that like a neutral pH. Acting as a great soil conditioner it improves soil structure and adds calcium and sulphur and other vital nutrients. It is very beneficial when growing brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) and helps reduce the risk of the disease clubroot.
50% Composted Straw
The foundation of this mix adds organic bulk and structure. This helps with aeration and water retention. The straw breaks down during the composting process promoting healthy root growth and is beneficial to the soil microbes.
20% Chicken Manure
A powerful fertilizer packet with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK). It is a slow release feed that promotes vigorous plant growth. A safe and natural source of soil improvement.
10% Gypsum
Improves soil structure and drainage while supplying essential calcium and sulphur. Aids with soil breakdown and root development. Does not alter soil pH.
20% Organic Matter
Creates a living soil that is full of microbial life and sustains soil fertility and plant life over time. Also enhances soil texture and moisture retention.
