Description
The Amabilis Chinese Peony is a clump-forming perennial that produces stunning large, scented, ruffled pink flowers from May to June. With a height and spread of 70 cm, this hardy plant thrives in full sun or part shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil. The vibrant candy-pink flowers, delicately edged with white, have a highly fragrant and vigorous presence, with blooms reaching up to 16 cm (6 inches) in diameter. Often shaped like anemones, the flowers are perfect for cutting, as the strong stems make them excellent for bouquets.
The Amabilis variety, first cultivated in France in 1856 by Jacques Calot, is a true garden treasure. This peony forms a bushy, herbaceous clump that grows up to 90 cm (35 inches) in all directions, producing beautiful double flowers that last about two weeks. The plant features large dark green leaves with finely divided lobes, and the purple-tinged young foliage gives way to a striking green in summer.
Peonies, like the Amabilis, have long been a classic garden plant, often gracing flowerbeds and pathways. This variety pairs beautifully with other perennials like columbines, bellflowers, foxgloves, and bearded irises, adding charm to any garden setting. The peony thrives best in flowerbeds, but should be planted in the ground rather than pots. With time, the plant matures and becomes even more impressive, producing up to 60 flowers.
