Description
The Plumcot is an enchanting interspecific hybrid combining the best qualities of Japanese plums and apricots. This small, slow-growing, deciduous fruit tree thrives in sheltered, sunny locations and can be grown as a fan-trained tree on a warm wall or as a bush tree with a 60cm trunk in milder climates.
Key Features:
- Unique Flavor & Texture: A delightful blend of plum texture with apricot’s sweet, spicy notes.
- Attractive Foliage & Flowers: Mid-green leaves and early spring blooms (April), which may require frost protection.
- Pollination & Companionship: Partially self-fertile, but yields improve with a pollination partner, such as another plumcot or a plum or apricot tree.
- Care Needs: Requires staking and planting in fertile, well-drained loamy soil enriched with compost or manure. Regular mulching in spring helps retain moisture.
- Seasonal Maintenance: Prune in summer like other stone fruits to maintain health and productivity.
Harvest:
- Pick Time: August
- Storage: Best enjoyed fresh, as the fruit does not keep for more than a few days.
Uses: Ideal for fresh eating, culinary creations, and making preserves, the Plumcot is as versatile as it is delicious. A wonderful addition to any sunny garden, this fully hardy hybrid promises both beauty and bounty.
