Description
Rhubarb 'Victoria' is a classic, late-harvest variety named after Queen Victoria upon her accession in 1837. Known for its striking, raspberry-red stems with green flecks near the leaf, this rhubarb is as ornamental as it is productive, perfect for vegetable gardens or flower borders. The thick stems hold their shape when cooked, offering a delicious balance of tart and sweet flavors.
Key Features:
- Growth: Reliable and easy to grow, 'Victoria' produces heavy crops for many years with minimal care.
- Appearance: Large, vibrant stems, red at the base with green near the leaves, creating a stunning visual.
- Flavor: A mix of sweet and tart, with juicy, greenish stalks that are not stringy.
- Care: Prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged areas, and apply a manure mulch annually.
- Harvest: Best picked from May onwards, avoiding the first year of harvest to allow the plant to establish.
Garden Tips:
Plant crowns in autumn, spaced 75 cm – 1m apart, and remove flowering stalks to promote stronger growth. Rhubarb needs cold winters but may need protection from hard frosts in early spring. Once established, 'Victoria' will reward you with an abundant crop each year, ideal for cooking and preserving.
Hardiness: Fully hardy and self-fertile.
