The Black Velvet variety is the best for me here in northwest Connecticut. Now six years in the ground, the vigorous plants have produced great crops of medium size sweet dark berries with delicious concentrated flavor for the past couple years. Black Velvet the most upright growth tendencies of six varieties I grow. Plants push lots of new growth and have become quite large, with manystrong tall vertical shoots that we'll attempt to train standards from. Mine are terraced in rows on west facing slope that is sunny about 2/3rds of the day. Highly recommend this variety !!

After going well last year their first year my gooseberry bushes look awful The leaves seem shrivelled up and dark and there is hardly any fruit They are in a raised bed of good topsoil Should I start again ?

Hi Patrick In short no. It is probably not anything you have done. This Spring with a relatively warm February followed by a terribly cold April and May has played havoc with all soft fruit. Some of the soft fruit growers will actually go out of business this year and they know what they are doing. Once the plants have not died i would just say leave as is and they will recover this winter Andrew Quickcrop

Would I be able to create a standard from your bare root offering? I want to plant it in a place where a standard would be better than the usual bush, and I'm getting to the stage (age!) where I can see that bending to pick is going to get tougher.

Hi Louise I wouldn't like to promise as it could be difficult but if you were handy and know your stuff it is possible. Niall Quickcrop

Hi Martin. Yes they are bare rooted and as a result they take very well come the Spring. They are roughly 1.5ft (45cm) tall and are 2 years old coming in to their 3rd year.

Amdrew, then I am confused by your saying taste is tart (sour?) while malcolm taylor has replied about a year ago it was sweet. Good you give a more detailed description of the taste? Plus, I would like to know what size are the plants you offer, pot size and growth above the pot? Thank you.

Hi Nik. Firstly before you get to excited about ordering i have to point out that we don't deliver to the US. But on the taste. These Gooseberries like any Gooseberry are tart when taken as they are ready. If you leave the fruit to continue to mature until they are ready to burst they take on a more watery flavour and the tartness goes out of them. I guess the could at that stage be described as more like Blueberries.

US site says Black Velvet taste like blueberry. Is it true? How would you describe the taste? What about drought tolerance?
Answered by Andrew
on February 08th, 2017
Hi Nik. Its not like any blueberry i have ever tasted as it is a very tart flavour where as Blueberries are not in general tart. The Black Velvet is a very hardy plant and will take drought and wet ground just as well.

What type of soil or compost as I will be planting in a Planter 6ft x 2ft x 2ft. Newbie to growing fruit.Thank You.
Answered by Andrew
on November 17th, 2015
Hi Brian. I would use a good quality topsoil mixed with about 20% compost and plenty of well rotted manure. Bear in mind that fruit bushes will remain in situ unlike vegetables so it is best to get the soil to as high a standard as possible from the outset. I would top dress around the bushes in later years with well rotted manure. I hope this helps. Andrew
