In a nutshell....

Purple sprouting broccoli is our own special mix of the 5 best purple broccoli varieties. 40 seeds per packet.

Purple Srouting Broccoli Rudolph is our own special mix of the 5 best purple broccoli varieties. In appearance, this variety is a far cry from green broccoli or calabrese, that is commonly displayed in shops although it does have a similar taste, albeit richer and more flavoursome.

Sowing & Spacing:

Sow in June and July, or indoors in April. Sow each seed into an individual module (approx 1.5cm deep) and plant out after about 4 weeks.

Space plants 75cm (29.5in) apart, with the same spacing between rows.

Hi Francis. Purple sprouting broccoli is sown around now and will be harvested next March/April. Is is supposed to over winter and give fresh vegetables at a time when there is little else in the garden. If you would like broccoli this Autumn sow a variety like 'Summer Purple'.

Hi Andrew, the purple sprouting broccoli I planted last year is all green leaf and not a whole lot of sprouts, any hints on increasing the size and amount of sprouts. Thanks Mary

Most brassicas are very hungry plants and will really appreciate a nitrogen rich feed. Regards.

What varieties are in this mix? Does it include an early one such as Rudolph? Also I do not want any summer varieties.

Hi Clodagh. I am afraid the seed growers don't specify the actual mix apart from the fact that there is a mix of early season Broccoli, mid season, Autumn and then overwintering. I am sorry i can't be more specific.

How long till harvest?

Hi Anne Purple sprouting broccoli is sown in April/May and is harvested in Spring of the following year. It takes a little practice on sowing time depending on where in the country you are as seeds sown too early can be ready for harvest in early Winter. Traditionally purple sprouting broccoli is used to fill a gap in the Spring when there is little else available in the garden, known as 'the hungry gap'. I hope this helps Andrew
