Description
Nantes 2 Milan is a quick growing carrot bred for early crops so suitable for polytunnel growing from a late January sowing. Sweet baby carrots can be harvested towards the end of June or allowed to grow on to produce medium to large size blunt ended roots. The smooth skinned carrots have glowing orange skin when washed and a well rounded, sweet and juicy flavour.
We view Nantes 2 Milan as a superb all rounder. In a taste test at Le Manor aux Quatres Saisons, chef Raymond Blanc and his team voted Nantes as having the best flavour.
Seed per pack - 2000 seeds
Sowing:
For early crops, sow directly in a polytunnel or greenhouse in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills (1.5cm deep). Later sowings from March onwards can be done directly outside. The best sowing date for indoor growing is in late January until early April.
If carrot root fly is a problem in your garden, it is advisable to delay outdoor sowing until late May or early June which will likely avoid the first generation of this toublesome pest. Germination takes 10 days on average with seedliongs being vulnerable to slug damage so be vigilant in removing slug habitats around the garden.
Notes: Carrots need a minimum soil temperature of 10˚C to germinate. If sowing very early cops, covering beds with fleece or a clear cloche for 2 weeks before sowing will help warm the soil.
Spacing:
Sow in rows 20cm apart for early crops, or 30cm apart if growing Nantes for large roots. Sow at approx 1cm between seeds which can be thinned to 2.5cm between carrots after 2-3 months.
