Description
Mushroom compost is the waste product from commercial mushroom growing and is a mildly alkaline compost due to the addition of chalk in the mushroom farming process. The compost mix is made up of a mix of peat, composted straw and horse manure and is an ideal value compost for soil improving and mulching by spreading on the surface of the soil.
Mushroom compost should not be used when growing acid loving plants like blueberries, rhododendrons or azaleas but is ideal for use on acid soils when growing plants that prefer a neutral pH. This compost is an ideal soil conditioner for acid soils that are low in organic matter as it adds bulk and balances pH, it can also be very beneficial for growing brassicas (cabbage family plants) in acid conditions as a raised pH reduces the instannce of the disease club root.
