Description
This plant has been grown in our nursery and is well established. Winter Savoury (Satureja Montana) is a semi-evergreen herb that produces small white flowers throughout the summer months. It grows quite bushy and can grow up to 40cm tall.
Its flavour is not too dissimilar to Thyme with a mild peppery taste. It is used in cooking for seasoning meat (usually with chicken or turkey), stuffing and bean dishes.
It makes a great companion plant for beans and will help keep bean weevils away from them. It also grows well with roses helping keep mildew and aphids at bay.
It is best to replace after 3 years as it will start to get woody and not grow as well after that, producing less leaves with a weaker aroma and flavour. You can easily grow more by taking cuttings and growing it from there. Cut back in Spring to encourage fresh new growth. This is a plant that needs lots of sun (6 hours a day) and well draining, moist soil.
This plant comes in a P9 pot and is ready to plant out. P9 pots are 9cm in diameter and are commonly used by professional horticulturists.
It can also be purchased as part of our 'choose your own' herb products at a reduced price (see recommended products below).
