Compact Gardening - Growing In Containers
The Carrot Patio Planter

The great thing about the dawn of the patio planter, or indeed the balcony box, is that it really opens up vegetable growing to almost everyone – which makes it a really valuable social tool. These carrot patio planters are a gem and look rather fancy being carrot orange. They will allow a good depth and re-usable year on year.

Depth is important for carrots as they can grow quite long so need deep unrestricted soil, because if carrots meet any obstruction even a stone, this will cause the carrots to grow mishapen and hard to peel and cut up when at cooking time. So this fold away patio planter is deep enough for carrots and most other root vegetables.

Because you are growing in containers, these patio planters allow you to adjust the soil type to suit the vegetables you want to grow which is very hard to do in a normal garden. Whatever soil type you need these patio planters will contain the soil and keep your vegetables growing neat, clean and tidy.

Personally I find homegrown carrots far more flavoursome than their supermarket alternative and these carrot patio planters makes it so easy! My daughter Leah would eat raw carrots all day long and is harder to keep out than the dreaded carrot fly! An odd thing is homegrown carrots don't seem to keep as long and are best used straight from the ground. Why do supermarket carrots keep for so long?

The Carrot Patio Planter is designed to bring you the unmistakable flavour of homegrown carrots even if you don't have a large garden to grow them in. They can be used on patios, balconies and in small gardens. The orange colured planters have sufficient depth of soil / compost for your crop to develop to a good size. They are very handy to use and being tough, can be re-planted year after year.

Dimensions: Planters measure 30cm (12") x 45cm (18") x 30cm (12") high.

Hi As most of my growing is done in an unheated greenhouse, I would consider using these for growing tomatoes and lettuce etc. Would you be able to get away with 3 tomato plants, or would it be better to stick with 2? Also, I intend planting Flyaway F1 carrots. Would it be deep enough for them? Regards Jimmy

Hi James 2 tomatoes max in one of these bags. And yes plenty deep for Flyaway carrots. I have done exactly what you are planning in these and it worked a treat Niall Quickcrop

Hi Joyce Two rows of carrots is best. One up each side. You can put in as many seeds as you want in these rows and then thin them out once they are about 2 inches high Niall Quickcrop

What soil to put into a carrot planter? Do you sell suitable soil for carrots
Answered by Niall
on November 26th, 2019
Hi James Carrots need a soil mix that is quite loose in texture so the root can easily grow down through it however something that is not to rich in nutrients that will cause the carrots to fork to much. The Gro-sure compost is probably the best for this or the Klasmann seed compost Niall Quickcrop

Hi Sinead I am afraid not. It is just the 2 planters that come with this pack. You need to fill the units with compost and sow carrot seeds. Regards Niall Quickcrop

Hi Gill. I am afraid the carrot planter will be too shallow to grow good parsnips. It is designed more for baby carrots.

Hi David Growing carrots in containers is a great way to start with them. I would recommend either Carrot Nantes or Chantaney Red Cored. Both are very easy to grow and really tasty. Regards Niall Quickcrop
