Organic & Peat Free Garden Compost
These handy bales contain compressed coconut fibre or 'coir'. Coir is an excellent seed compost with superior water retention. Importantly it's also peat-free. Soak the bale in water and it will expand to a whopping 60 litres of compost!
This planter compost comes in a 5kg bale that expands to make 60 Litres when water is added. It is perfect for growing vegetable plants: young plants love coir based soil and compost, as it has better aeration and holds the water better.
Haxnicks Premium formula with organic nutrients provides faster growth and healthier plants using organically derived soil constituents - including nutrients, trace elements and minerals - to provide balanced nutrient retention within the coir. Mycorrhizal fungi enables a greater absorption of nutrients, producing faster growth and increased disease resistance.
Re-hydrating Coir Blocks
Coir Compost is made from compressed coco peat or coconut fibre. The bales have been compressed for easy transport and handling, but need to be re constituted by adding water to make a light and fluffy peat-free planting medium.
How To Use:
- Soak each block individually in a wheelbarrow or other suitable large container.
- You will need approx. 15 litres of water to hydrate each block.
- The block will start to expand as it soaks up moisture.
- When the base of the block starts to crumble, invert the block and break apart with your hands.
- Add the remaining water to any dry areas and allow to soak though.
- Continue this process until all the compost is moist and easy to crumble through your fingers.
Adding Nutrients to a Coir-based Growing Medium
Remember, just like peat, Coir is a sterile compost base and contains very little nutrients in it's standard form. The organic nutrients added will feed your plants for up to 3 months, but after that you will need to add a plant feed to coir peat.
We recommend mixing our ‘Seafeed’ pelleted free range poultry and seaweed feed to build a slow release compost that will feed your plants for over 3 months. Demanding plants like tomatoes and courgettes will benefit from a further liquid feed when the fruits are forming.
Coir holds up to 5 times its volume in water, so is an excellent compost base for holding nutrients added in liquid feeds.
