Treble Bay Easy Access Timber Composter

In a nutshell....

This is the full treble bay unit from our famous New Zealand Box system. The kit builds a composter measuring 270cm (9ft) by 90cm by 120cm (4ft) high. Also features our unique brackets enabling you to easily remove the front of the composter for easy emptying.

Our 3 bay New Zealand Box composter is the ultimate composting system. The design works by using the three separate bays to bring you garden and kitchen waste through three distinct stages of composting to produce a perfectly mixed, rich and dark end product. The system works by adding material to the first bay until full and partially broken down. The part finished compost is then transferred to the second bay which mixes it and adds air to the pile while you add any new material to the now vacant first bay. The composting process starts again in bay 2 and allows the heap to rot down further. Finally the material is added to the third bay where it will be extracted from once the material has broken down fully into what gardeners call 'black gold'. When working correctly the New Zealand Box composter always has 3 working bays with material at various stages of decomposition; it's not just a compost bin, it's a composting system!

The unit is made up of sturdy 3 inch square (7.5cm) corner posts with timbers permanently fixed to the back and sides of the unit. The centre posts also feature an internal groove which allows the dividing wall to be added and removed easily when moving material from one side to the other. Our composters also include our unique bracket system on the front of the box which allows the retaining boards to be removed for filling and emptying the bin; our system even allows you to remove the bottom row of boards without removing the top!

The corner fixing posts are designed to be buried in the ground but can also be easily modifies to suit placing on a hard surface. Please contact us if this is a requirement for your garden.

Our wooden composters are the most forgiving type of bin as the increased air circulation afforded by the slatted sides means you need not be as careful with your mix as you would with a closed plastic unit.

The Kit features as follows:

5 no. 180cm (6ft) by 17.5cm tall treated timber boards.
27 no. 90cm (3ft) by 17.5cm tall treated timber boards.
8 no. 7.5cm (3inch) square and 4ft high treated timber corner posts.
21 no. 85cm (2ft 9inch) by 15cm (6 inch) tall treated timber boards for removable front slats.
42 no. Heavy duty injection moulded fixing brackets.
90 no. 5.0 x 60 Self tapping wood screws.
84 no. 4.0 x 30 Self tapping wood screws.
1 no. 270cm (3ft) 3in x 2in Joining rail.

A bit of a job to assemble but once up i was delighted with it. The main reason i bought it was the unique way the slats at the front can easily pop off which makes filling and emptying very easy. Delighted i have it working well now. Loads of space for moving the compost along

Now that's a composter. Good size etc. I like the wood, as don't like to see any plastic in my garden

This is a great product when finished but it takes time to build. I am sure for a DIY type person assemble would be easy but not for one person. I had to get a neighbour to help with building but the end result looks impressive. Maybe this prodcuct could be made simpler.

The 3 bay compost unit is quite difficult to setup. It is not a one person job. The instructions are very hard to follow. It didn't help that it was not all the parts were delivered in the same day. Putting on the plastic brackets that the wood slides into is a very time consuming part. I don't see why holes cannot be pre drilled. The paper template is not great at all. In the end I had to pay someone to help me out. One of the Middle cuts of wood was 2cm to long and had to be cut. The end product is nice but we found it was difficult to line up the brackets exactly so it is not the straightest at the front which is a pity, but after 4 hours we were done with it! I think with a few tweeks this could be made a lot easier for the end user to setup

Took me a couple of hours to assemble but not too difficult. The three bin composter was different than that depicted in the video in that I didn't need to set posts in concrete. This in fact gave me more flexibility to select a location and the possibility of moving it if this site doesn't work out well. I was able to move the assembled frame on my own but would suggest that it really requires two people. The slants on the front and the brackets for holding them were very easy to assemble. The slats make emptying the wheel barrow very easy. It looks neat and tidy in the garden. Here's to buckets of compost. There isn't anything negative I can say about this product.

I bought the three bay New Zealand compost system as I to put it quite frankly was too lazy to build my own :) I had one area for composting which was made from old wood pallets, This construction was easy enough to assemble with two people, (I would recommend two people) and has been in working order since it was put together, a very good piece of kit for anyone interested in a system used for Composting household waste and garden vegetation. Very happy with the product, would recommend to anyone, looks pretty and serves a great purpose! Thank you....

We have had a homemade DIY new Zealand compost bed system for years. As it was starting to fall to pieces we thought we would treat ourselves to this state of the art one. The video shows clearly how the compost process works. There was a good bit more assembly than we had bargined for - you definitely need two people and a good electric screw driver. When we had problems with construction Andrew was very helpful in sorting them out.The end product is sturdy, easy to use and holds a lot of compost. Hope it lasts as long as the old ones and then it will have been worth the work of putting it togather

Would it be possible to get 6' corner posts instead of the 4' posts as advertised on the website. I see on previous comments that the length was reduced to allow ease of construction and necessity but I'd rather fix them into the ground for rigidity.

Hi Stephen Yes. It may delay the delivery a little as we would have to get them cut specially. If you email in to customer service with your request they will sort out how best to place your order Niall Quickcrop

Any hints about keeping rats out in the winter...chicken wire in the base??
Answered by Niall

Hi Mary Don't add cooked food is the best way but other than that the only real way is to put wire around it as you suggest. However this negates the advantage of the easily removeable front Niall Quickcrop

Hi there, The NZcompost system looks great,I wonder if there is an option to have a cover over the top ,to keep the rain off? Also,do you provide an assembly service, and how much ,is delivery to Kerry?many thanks

on June 17th, 2020
Hi Mary It is a great system. We don't supply tops for them at the moment but to be honest it is only in the very worst of the winter that you might need a top so i tend to put cardboard or carpet on top. The rest of the year it needs the air and moisture to get at it. I am afraid we don't offer an installation service but it comes with instructions, screws etc. It is delivered in 5 large packages by couriers Niall Quickcrop

Does the New Zealand bin system need a top cover to prevent compost becoming too wet?
Answered by Niall
on February 26th, 2020
Hi Mary I don't use one as i find in the summer the compost can dry out to much and hence the composting process slows down. In the winter i just cover the top with cardboard which keeps the heat in and stops nutrients from leaching out. That said we have a few customers who built lids but i really don't think they are necessary as you are constantly adding new material on top Niall Quickcrop

Is pressure treated wood suitable to use in a composter to produce compost for growing food? Pressure treated means chemically treated?
Answered by Niall
on November 09th, 2019
Hi Michael Our wood mills uses a treatment that is certified by the soil association as perfectly fine to use beside soil or compost for producing food. So the wood in this unit is perfectly fine for using when producing compost for growing We grow our own food organically so are very mindful of this. Regards Niall Quickcrop

Want to put composter against block wall. Is the easiest way to do this to attach back panels to posts before installing all against wall ?
Answered by Niall
on May 27th, 2019
Hi Mary Yes. That is probably the easiest way however you can build the complete unit without the front and with 3 people lift it in to position as well. This might be easier structurally to do Niall Quickcrop

In the kit list it states the posts are 4ft but the compost bins are 4ft which suggests they will not be long enough to go into the ground. Should they not be 6ft? If so this means you would also have to level the ground where the bins are to be located.
Answered by Niall
on March 25th, 2019
Hi Amanda These kits used to be supplied with posts that went in to the ground however we now only supply them to sit on the surface as driving them in ground was overfill and a lot of people were struggling with that. This is explained in the product description as the video on Youtube is an older version Regards Niall Quickcrop

Hi Micheal Yes the wood is treated. These units will last 8/10 years maybe longer. I have one up now for over 8 years and it doesn't look like it is going anywhere anytime soon Niall Quickcrop

Hi Ian Each of the bays are 3ft wide so the treble bay is 9ft. I am not sure what has you thinking it is available in 12ft however we could give you 4 bays to make up your 12ft Regards Niall Quickcrop
