European Larch is one of the few deciduous native European conifers. It is not native to the UK and Ireland but has been around for a while probably from the 1600's. The larch is one of the earliest pockets of green in Spring; the is no greener green than freshly emerging larch needles. This tree doesn't disappoint in Autumn either when the same needles turn bright yellow before they fall.
When introduced, the European larch quickly became popular with estate owners for it's decorative value. The high quality timber is makes excellent gates and fence posts and is also prized by traditional boat builders. Due to the size of a mature tree, it is not recommended for small or medium gardens but if you have the space larch makes a beautiful specimen.
