Description
Open fronted nest boxes have a wider entrance suitable for birds who don't tend to use bird boxes with tight entrance holes. The NK SW 04 Box should attract robins and other species such as the Spotted Flycatcher, the Pied Wagtail, the Black Redstart and the Common Redstart.
The nest box is made from a material called 'WoodStone': a blend of concrete and wood fibres which ensures excellent thermal insulation and a comfortable, familiar nesting environment. It is a breathable material, leading to a more stable indoor environment for nesting and breeding.
With a much longer lifespan than traditional wooden nest boxes, WoodStone boxes won't rot or split with long-term exposure to the elements.
The two ribs on the back ensure the box solidly hangs on walls and trees.
Developed with input from ornithologists, Vivara Pro nest boxes have optimized dimensions to suit many of our native wild bird species.
Nest Box Placement:
With an open fronted nest box, placement is important as these boxes are obviously more open and accessible to predators.
For robins it is recommended to place the nest box approximately 1 meter from the ground, well hidden among greenery or vegetation. For redstarts and wagtails, installation on (industrial) buildings is suitable. Ideally choose a quiet, sheltered spot - such as under an overhang or protruding structure, or in a corner with minimal disturbance.
Cleaning:
After young birds have fledged cleaning can commence. Alternatively wait until after the first frost. Use a mild disinfectant and warm soapy water. Regular cleaning increases the chance of reuse the following season.
