Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a fast-growing deciduous tree that adds striking colour to the landscape in Autumn. Native to North America, the tree can grow up to 25 meters tall over its lifespan, with wide-spreading and sturdy branches.
Broad, deeply lobed leaves reach up to 22 cm in length, emerging bright yellow in spring before turning green during summer. In autumn, the leaves take on shades of scarlet red, orange, and brown.
The Red Oak has a smooth greyish-brown bark when young, which then becomes more textured and scaly with age. The tree produces acorns which take 2 years to fully ripen, at which point they will have a deep reddish brown colour.
It is a popular choice for wildlife habitats, so if you have the space it is very wildlife friendly, providing nesting space, protection and food for squirrels, birds etc.
