Bare Root Strawberry Plants
Grow your own crop of sweet strawberries with these bare root strawberry plants. They are called bare root because the plants are dormant and are shipped without soil around the roots, you will receive a root with older leaves attached. Don't worry about what they look like when you get them, because as soon as they are planted they wake from their dormant state and grow new leaves followed by flowers and fruit.
These grow particularly well in raised beds where there is no danger of waterlogging. They also grow perfectly in containers and urban planters. We sell this variety of strawberry singly or as a pack of 6
Early crop strawberries can bring sweet, juicy fruit to your table before the peak summer season. Follow these steps to maximize your harvest:
1. Planting
- Choose a hanging basket or a large pot filled with multi-purpose compost.
- Plant 2–3 strawberry plants per container, ensuring they have enough room to grow.
2. Watering & Ventilation
- Keep the compost consistently moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- On hot days, ventilate greenhouses by opening doors and vents. This helps regulate temperature and encourages pollinating insects to visit.
3. Maintaining Healthy Plants
- As the plants grow, remove any long runners. These runners divert energy away from fruit production.
- Check regularly for slug damage and address infestations promptly to protect developing fruit.
4. Protecting Your Crop
- To prevent birds from stealing ripening fruit, net greenhouse doors and vents.
- During very hot weather, use a piece of horticultural fleece to shield the plants from scorching. This will protect leaves, flowers, and fruit from heat damage.
5. Harvesting
- Pick strawberries as they ripen to enjoy fresh, early-season fruit straight from your garden.
By providing consistent care and attention, you can enjoy a bountiful and delicious early strawberry harvest!
