Durapost system with timber fencing - header image

If you're familiar with the Quickcrop garden diary, you may have noticed the low timber fence around my vegetable plot, which is supposed to keep things looking neat and tidy but has got very rotten now so needs to be replaced. To be fair, it has lasted for 10 years in wet ground so owes me nothing - but it did get me looking for a longer lasting alternative

We are now stocking a very nice new fencing product - Durapost. The key advantage of the Durapost system is that it uses a pre-drilled, cold-rolled galvanised steel post to replace timber or concrete alternatives. The Durapost will last at least 25 years, it won't rot or crack and is lightweight and easy to install.

Durapost can come painted with three different colours as well as a galvanised steel finish.

The posts are available in galvanised finish or painted in 3 subtle colours (as shown above). The system also includes a range of accessories including capping rails, post caps and gravel boards to achieve a very high level of finish using a standard timber fence panel.

The Durapost fencing range features some very smart composite boards (recycled UV stabilised plastic) that - while they may not suit my own garden - will look fantastic in a more contemporary setting.

My Particular Problem
There are couple of reasons why I will be using Durapost for my new fence. Having posts that don't rot is a big one, but I also like the composite gravel boards (pictured below).

The gravel board means the timber panel doesn't touch the ground, but it is also handy for me for another reason. I have a problem with skutch grass creeping in from the surrounding field and, by partially burying a gravel board, it will help keep it out.

I did this with timber boards 10 years ago, which worked pretty well until they rotted away. Most of my time spent weeding the garden, incidentally, was carefully removing skutch grass roots, which are a headache because any little part left in the soil will continue to grow.

What are the Benefits of the Durapost Fencing System?

Lightweight But Durable Traditionally, garden fencing has commonly been constructed using timber or concrete posts. There are a number of potential downsides to these methods. Wooden posts can rot or deteriorate over time while concrete posts can start to chip or crack, allowing water in.

Durapost fence posts are made from galvanised cold rolled steel. This makes them very strong and durable, but also deceptively lightweight and easy to install. By comparison, concrete posts can be heavy or cumbersome to put in place.

Durapost's composite fencing panels have a much longer working life than timber (over 15 years).

Ease of Maintenance The galvanised steel posts also won't require maintenance such as painting, sealing or staining. They are rust-resistant and require minimal upkeep.

Weather Resistance DuraPosts are very weather-resistant: they have been tested to withstand winds of up to 110mph. In contrast, timber fencing posts are more vulnerable to stormy weather conditions and can often need replacement.

Aesthetics Looks-wise, Durapost fencing posts are sleeker and more unobtrusive than their timber and concrete cousins. They are well suited to modern surroundings and can complement a range of modern designs.

Flexibility The Durapost fencing system is designed to be used with a variety of fencing panel materials. It can easily be combined with timber or metal panels, decorative panels and Durapost's own composite panel boards (made from 70% recycled and UV stabilised material).

All in all, I think the Durapost is a really good system. I will get my own fencing job done in the next few weeks so will have some hands on experience with it. If anyone needs to build a new fence or replace a rotten one let me know, I would be delighted to help put together a pack for you.
